I have a really light schedule this year, and I'm actually looking forward to attending panels instead of sitting on them :)

Writing and I are having a bit of love tonight, mostly because I got to write a paragraph in 4/4 time. And then I will write one in 6/8, and this makes me happy because I am a dork.

As a not 12&under can I still say 'yay' for the manga panel? Sounds like fun!

I was a little bit confused by that one, but I do actually have some suggestions. Although my mother thinks that my idea of under twelve and the normative one might not be the same thing...

Ummm. I never actually ask for particular panels; I kind of just generally volunteer for categories or classes of panels. The only thing I can think of is that someone recognized the Sagara name, but didn't realize that I've been writing all along under the West name. It can be a bit confusing.

Most of the most popular manga -- things like Fruits Basket, for instance -- were written specifically for kids, or at least for kids in the 10-12 range. Kenshin. Hikaru. Most of the stuff I have in my house. The North American market has a narrower definition of what "for kids" means than the Japanese.

There are definitely manga that are written for the older reading set, and a whole ton of porn -- but there's boy-porn and girl-porn as well.

Hmm. I guess you're right that most popular titles in the States come out of Shonen Jump or the equivalent shojo mags, but definitely a lot of that manga--particularly SJ titles--are too graphic for the same American age bracket.

Ah, Hikaru. Apparenly it inspired a generation of middle-school kids to go out and play the game.

I almost exclusively read seinen (well, okay, I like my SJ titles too *g*), so I guess my perspective is a bit warped. And I'd never think of FB as a kids' manga, since all the people I know who read it are in high school or college.

I'd say that Hikaru no Go is a great manga for the 10-12 set as well.

As for smaller kids, VIz is putting out the original Pokemon manga (with name changes; Ash is Red, for example), which Jamie likes me to read to him. There's also a new manga called Dinosaur Hour (also from Viz), which has little short episodes with dinosaurs talking to each other. One has three allosauruses standing on each other's shoulders so that they're as tall as the brachiosaurus they're stalking. It turns out badly for them. :) It makes Jamie laugh, and Liam doesn't mind sitting and listening too.

No, they didn't -- I think this is possibly the first year since 1992 that they haven't, but I know it's a Worldcon, and I know there are hundreds of authors who all want panels/readings/kaffeeklatches.

I should also add that I kaffeeklatches are one of the things I always volunteer for -- but I imagine hundreds of people also volunteer to do them.

Maybe you should take mine... I'm not sure anyone will show up for mine. I don't always ask for it so I don't know what possessed me this time but I didn't realize they knock some authors out (especially ones who've published more than me...yikes!)

1. Never judge the importance of an author by the number of their publications. I loved your books, I think they were fabulous, and I cannot wait to read the new one when it comes out.

2. It's a Worldcon, it has hundreds and hundreds of authors, and everyone wants to Do Stuff. I don't think of it as 'knocking' me out so much as juggling a schedule; they schedule people they think attendees will want to see more of for as much as they possibly can, and they're going to have internal priorities that just aren't clear to those of us who aren't working for free to put this all together.

3. Not being sure if anyone will show up for a kaffeeklatch is a time honored tradition, and I am always afraid of this very thing *wry g*. It is normal :).

I'm really appreciative of you saying all of that. <3 Like, a lot. I'd actually stumbled on your reviews of my books in F&SF as I'm revamping my website soon (finally!) and was looking for content to post on it (reviews being one of them) and was blown away and so very grateful for the good things you said about my books. As you probably know it's really heartening when people - especially other professionals that you respect - seem to really understand what you're trying to do with a book. I know not everyone will 'get it' so it makes it even more awesome when people do.

Orbit's slated my book for an April 2010 release and I'll be posting obnoxious gleedom as the process goes forward, especially when the cover's finalized. :D
