Well, Dickens made a pretty good living, and he regularly insulted his readers, often directly, in his novels. It was a different time then, but still...
I'm curious; I've read most of Dickens, but it was in university, and I recall not a great deal about what I read except as patchwork impression. Can you point me at an example?
