The first one you sell is your "first published novel" which is what "first novel" is short for.
I wrote three whole (awful) novels before I was nineteen, then no more until I was over thirty, I wrote one (almost-good-enough) novel then, and then I wrote The King's Peace, which is of course, my first novel.
