For what it's worth, my editor actually told me she didn't want books set in the same world as the one I'd sold her, at least not right away, but wanted something else first--their philosophy is that it's better for writer and house to focus on something different while waiting for the first book to get out there and seeing how that book does.
I have to say, as I start working on something new, I am coming to agree, from a personal writerly development point of view--it is good for me to be starting a completely new book.
A lot depends on the publisher, and who their audience is, and how they market their books.
