I think it ties into the frustrating notion that fantasy is somehow anti-intellectual, a turning-one's-back-on-the-world-of-reason, that I hear from some many SF readers who bemoan fantasy's rise.

I think it's all metaphor, and that fantasy works because it has some of the most powerful metaphoric tools out there in its toolkit, and that anyone who thinks we read about magic because we don't believe in science isn't paying attention, but the attitude comes up again and again.
