My cute anecdote: having Frederic Pohl and his wife step into our elevator, both dressed in gala gear. FP starts fussing with his hair, looking into the elevator mirrors, saying that he should have brushed his hair. His wife replies that he should've since a lot of people will be taking pictures of him. My friend Andrea intervened and said that his hair looked fine; I rushed to back her up in her assessment. I think they had us pegged for regular hotel guests, since neither of us had any Con shirts or tags.
When they left the elevator we looked at each other and squeeled a little. "Frederic Pohl! In a tux!" ^_^
