I wouldn't have thought it was possible to get through it that way, but she apparently had no problems
I guess it depends on how linear your mind works. I've been known to start trilogies with the second book, when I can't find the first immediately, but I always try to get the first book eventually. I may be an anomoly though. When I first read Katharine Kerr's Deverry books, I had the first four, but accidently went from the second book to the fourth. Due to the celtic knot of timelines in the story, I didn't even notice my mistake till halfway through, whereupon I read book three, then picked up book four from where I left off. And didn't have any problem understanding or enjoying the overall story.
