I'm with you on this. Generally, I won't start a series in the middle. If the first book isn't available, I just don't read the series.
One thing I've discovered I like is when a series is published (republished?) in one volume. One I am reading right now is The Cobra Trilogy by Timothy Zahn (electronic format from Baen, price $4). It's the right size--I do dislike reading a book in one sitting, which is what happens with the shorter ones. Can't afford to read two or three in one day; book allowance can't handle that! :-(
