I think also, if you're some famous author, you can sell the original copy, pre-copyedit changes, for fabulous amounts of money. And if you're a very literary writer, you can sell or give it to a university collection for students to study.
I've had my "original manuscripts" send back -- they're the copy Tor printed out, because I submit digitally. (I've never actually printed out any of my novels, except the bits I take to cons to read.) Having no attachment to the thing and no belief that it's worth anything to anyone, I think I've just recycled them, though one of them may have had the back used for kid drawing paper before being recycled.
