I've seen some of the bigger names donate mss to charitable auctions at Worldcon-type auctions, which strikes me as an imminently useful thing to do with them. A fan who loves it gets to cherish them properly, and you don't have to store them any more! I don't know that this would help low to midlist writers with small living quarters, though.
