I agree with the whole need to really know the history of the period you're working in, whether it's an alternate history or a real one. I admit it's a pet peeve of mine with regard to historical or fantasy illustration; the same thing applies. You don't have to delineate every little detail, but the better you know your stuff, the better sense you have of which details to highlight in order to get your point across, to give that perfect flavor in order to make the setting and timeline and mood and all come to life... Um, yeah. Ahem.
Also have to agree about the need for bookshelves full of books in a house; it just flummoxes me to go in somebody's house and find they have no books-- it's such a shock; what the heck do they _do_? How can anyone live without books lining the walls? Don't they know how cool it is to be able to just reach up and get a favorite friend off the shelf?? How... uncivilized!
