FWIW, the biggest reason we're interested in Bookscan information is because it also lists market share, both for categories and specific titles. I can't remember if Costco and Walmart and the like are included--I know they've revamped it recently to create several tiers, so the big box retailers may be on one of them. I'll check today, because now I'm curious.
That would be interesting to know, in either case; as I mentioned at the tail end of the my post, since there's really only one chain at the moment in Canada, the question of market share is less pressing -- for them, at any rate.
But thanks for pointing out a (large) bookchain reason for using BookScan. I'm wondering, otoh, what one would do with the information -- I can see, if entire categories are being undersold in your chain, or if you're selling a larger market share of another, that you might want to revamp the square footage devoted to them -- but that would seem like a huge undertaking.
I'm assuming by market share it's a percentage of the information that BookScan gathers, so it's not entirely representative if it doesn't include the big box stores that also sell books.
