I can only speak to short stories, but I feel sometimes like I'm actively getting stupider the longer I write. It is immensely frustrating, and I have to remind myself that it's probably because I am far more aware about problems with my writing now than I was when I was a teenager making my first sale, not because my I.Q. has dropped 100 points. And I remind myself that at a certain point, math was like that too. I was far less scared to write science fiction when I knew [ed.: correction] more less science. If I'd actually stayed a history major, I would probably be too scared to write everything else.
