I find MySpace useful to keep up with some friends that I see at a concert annually. I find Facebook useful to keep in touch with graduate students (I'm staff and not an advisor; just a person who helps smooth the bumps in academia).
My friends call Facebook "like MySpace, but not as awful" and I agree. There's less visual and aural clutter on the site. Both are good to drop quick notes of the "hi, how are ya?" variety without the formality of email.
I still check LJ significantly more than Facebook and I try to get to MySpace once every other week or so.
