The newer books /are/ different than the older books, but part of that is that the characters have grown, which I think was part of the point. You can see, if you go through the whole thing, how they got from point a to point b. And with the addition of a lot more sex (which was, in my understanding, a lot of the unhappiness people had) started off kind of like a snowball rolling downhill, and just got a lot bigger, right around Narcissus in Chains. But there is a definite progression to the changes in the series. They're just very significant changes.

I'm one of those people who are still a fan. I like the older stuff more, the newer is more of a guilty pleasure. Like junk food. But I enjoy it.
