Anon., I've had much the same experience with my youngest, who has ADHD. I think for him, one of the problems has been the lag between his intellectual and social development. You can explain something to him and he'll nod and seem to comprehend, but having the skill set to *implement* it is a whole other story. Last year especially, there was a lot of frustration because he didn't react to things the way his teachers expected him to, and he couldn't articulate what was wrong.
