Accuracy seems to be a bit of a problem.

I have only just figured out how to add friends. I am stumbling my way toward GUI from the world of GEnie and usenet postings. If I offend anyone, well, who's going to be surprised?

We were just talking about how the very use of the word "friends" is problematic. Makes it seem too much like "you're my friend, but you're not ..." In other words, high school stuff. Calling it a "reading list" would actually be much more comfortable. :-)

That's synchronicity for you . I was saying the same thing, but probably more colourfully . It's one of the reasons that I had, until this recent bout of hives that is research drove me to find something else to occupy my mind with, avoided LJs; I could read the few people I know have LJs, regardless, and bookmark them through a browser. But some of them helpfully have Anonymous posting turned off :/.

I think Orkut is worse, though, for the whole 'friends' thing. Oh, and the loading times.

I don't turn off anonymous posting precisely because I don't want to stop interesting people from posting just because they don't have ljs.

Also because I link to my journal from my main web page, so I'm explicitly inviting folks in, and it seems rude to leave them unable to post, given that.

I do lock some posts so that non-lj-reading-list folks can't read them. My test for when to do that is: if a random 10-year-old I've never met before stumbled upon my journal, would I be comfortable with her seeing this? But that's only because of the specific audience coming through my web page.
