Just in case you didn't see it
Apr. 25th, 2008 11:08 pmThe cover for Cast in Fury, which is due in October of 2008. Which, by normal calendar, is generally called September of 2008.
This is the cover flat that is used in sales kits, rather than the cover that will be bound; it's also called a cover proof. The front is what I've posted, and the back -- which I should have had scanned, and will if anyone wants to see it -- has the marketing tips and information that are in theory more relevant to selling the book to bookstores.
One of the points listed in my Luna publishing history is that Cast in Secret had a 6 week Sales Velocity of 57%. I still haven't remembered to ask a rep what "Sales Velocity" means, but I am assuming that a Six Week Sales Velocity of 57% means that the book in question (the previous volume in the series) sold 57% of the total number to date at that time in the first six on-sale weeks.
ETA: Because I never upload images, I didn't realize that this one would be smaller than the actual .jpeg; if you want to see a larger version (with slightly more legible text, it's here.

Date: 2008-04-26 03:34 am (UTC)Cast in Fury is done, for a value of done which includes the line & copy-edits (I'm almost finished) and the page proofs. Cast in Silence is not yet written, but is due at the end of the year.

Date: 2008-04-26 03:41 am (UTC)It's the book that addresses the missing six months in Kaylin's life (although it's not a prequel, and it's not set in the past).

Date: 2008-04-26 06:31 am (UTC)I think that's the plan. Well, okay, that's my plan. Cast in Silence, as I mentioned, addresses the missing six months, and how Kaylin first met the Hawklord, among other things. But... I want to do an Aerian book, and I want to do a Dragon book, and I want to do a book set at the heart of the fiefs, although that might only make more sense after Cast in Fury.

Date: 2008-04-26 10:57 am (UTC)WELL, if *MY* money can make a difference, you can definitely plan on all of them *nods to the list of interesting bits yet to be explored in full detail*
I would buy a "Kaylin as Eve Dallas for her fantasy world" series, too - considering that NR is up to 23 books now and it's still enjoyable.

:0 Also, is it me or the picture or does this model have darker skin than the other three? X_x?

I think it's just the scan; it's a darker overall cover, but the scan seems to have sucked out some of the brighter red tones.

Aaaand... That would make sense, most definitely. Seriously, though, other than that, it's a pretty intriguing cover. :)

Date: 2008-04-26 05:46 am (UTC)Oh well, I preordered it and broke down and ordered Hidden City in hardcover... this will really mess with my bookshelf devoted to your works, as I have all the other DAW releases in paperback only (at the time I didn't have a full time job yet, so I patiently waited for paperbacks). Oh well, all in a good cause: you and Sherwood Smith and C.J. Cherryh and Lois McMaster Bujold get the hardcover treatment these days ^^.

Yes, well, that's just mean. Now I have to wait a super long time to know what the heck happened to Marcus. Ah well. It's nice seeing Kaylin in the bracer, but why is she doing magic with it on?
I love cover people. This one will look very pretty on my shelf next to the others. They're colorful!

Date: 2008-04-27 02:16 am (UTC)That was also my first thought after, "Squeeeeeeeeee!" but yanno, the artists sometimes take license. I've heard other authors complain about some major descriptive items being totally changed when translated to a cover.
Also is that meant to be her elemental dress? (I'm assuming from the water and the gold belt there.) I always thought it was a strapless? ;) Although I did spend a long time trying to figure how a dress could be sleeveless AND backless, so small straps would work.

Date: 2008-04-27 02:19 am (UTC)I was thinking of a low scoop with no sleeves, so, not spaghetti straps, but, no sleeves.
Tank tops are sleeveless, right? But you wouldn't say they had straps? (This is sort of a genuine question).

Date: 2008-04-27 02:38 am (UTC)Because I know I am not very good with clothing (I have a sister who is fabulous with both that and shoes, although shopping with her is not for the faint of heart), I try very hard to find something similar to what I think people are wearing so that I can describe it.
So I'm only asking because I'm aware that I could actually be very wrong about this o.O.
My understanding of sleeveless has always been something like a sun dress, in which the dress falls from the shoulders the way a normal dress would fall -- but doesn't have the arm fabric.
I thought strapless meant nothing at all on the arms or shoulders.
So when I describe sleeveless, it means no sleeves, but implies fabric over the shoulders, and if this is wrong, then I have been doing this wrong for, oh, mumble mumble books now, and I need to know ;_;.

Date: 2008-04-28 09:00 pm (UTC)I think that's her elemental dress too... which is odd. I looked at it and thought, "This should be the cover for the LAST book. The dress, the rising water... all that happened in book 3!
Another book?

Re: Another book?
Date: 2008-04-27 03:02 am (UTC)I love book clubs :). I admit that I clicked the link -- but I'm never sure that people will actually be comfortable discussing a book if the author is reading what they say; I think we all have a natural tendency to just say the good things to be polite, so I'm not sure you want me to be reading an ongoing discussion. Although I could answer questions if you wanted :).
Re: Another book?
Date: 2008-04-27 07:35 pm (UTC)I did have one question myself and one request. My question is: Have you ever seen or know of any online drawings or pictures of readers interpretation of the various races like the Leontine? I'd be interested in any artistic renderings.
Also, I wanted to request something. There are a few people on the site, mostly young women (not me), who are trying to become professional fiction writers. Would you be interested in maybe setting up a chat date/time there? I was thinking in a month or so. I know they'd have questions about your books in addition to any insight you might have concerning the profession of writing and getting published.
At any rate, it's something to think about if you are able. I am not one of the moderators nor site owner, but I could get them to contact you if you are interested.
Thanks

P.S. I love your avatar. It reminds me of the Beatles Yellow Submarine movie.
Re: Another book?
Date: 2008-04-27 07:55 pm (UTC)Not that I know of. My own visual artistic ability is somewhere between none and should-never-inflict-on-innocent-people, so it's not something I've attempted.

Sure :). I'm not sure what the various time zones are, but I'm sure we could work out a time :).

A friend did it ages ago; it's actually a crop from a larger, Moebius-style picture which was meant to (gently) mock me. This would be a theme, among my friends. She has a great deal of artistic talent, and illustrates children's books for a living.

Date: 2008-04-27 02:25 pm (UTC)A Fourth and a Fifth "Cast" Book - How Wonderful
Date: 2008-04-28 01:48 pm (UTC)Thank you so much for sharing the cover of Cast in Fury. I was delighted to see that this series is being continued. I loved Cast in Secret, and thought that the series was ended with that book, so I am thrilled to see that a new one is forthcoming.
I am in the middle of The Hidden City - which is my first foray into your Michelle West works, and I am loving that work as well. In fact, despite it being an extremely heavy hardcover, I've been carrying it in my shoulderbag, and reading it whenever I get a break (much to the detriment of my neck and shoulder).
This leads me to a question - would you be willing to give your publisher permission to reissue your Sun Sword and Hunter books in Amazon Kindle format? I recently purchased a Kindle (with the goal of literally lightening my daily load), and would love to be able to purchase your older works in ebook format.
Re: A Fourth and a Fifth "Cast" Book - How Wonderful
Date: 2008-04-29 04:24 am (UTC)This is embarrassing, but I admit up front that I don't know who has those rights. I will dig out the contracts and look tomorrow; I'm just finishing up my taxes here (in Canada, 30th of April is what we affectionately refer to as Doomsday in this house), so the files are a tiny bit of a mess.
