So, we are trying to make room for things in the West household. This involves getting rid of rather a lot of other things. I was downstairs making dinner and my husband was upstairs, inspecting the bookshelves (there are bookshelves in all of the rooms of the house except the kitchen).

He just came downstairs, and asked if I needed the Japanese language Kenshin (I don't, although I told him to hold on to the French versions until the kids are done with French in school). Then he asked about one or two others (all not needed) and last:

"What about the other Japanese ones?"

"Which ones?"

"The ones with the short, obnoxious girl."

Er, no, that's not entirely helpful.

(Surely he doesn't mean Yotsuba&!?)

LOL!

Actually, though, he meant Kodomo no Omocha, but it took me a while to figure this out.

how COULD he???
why don't you just double stack them instead...?

Well... I did keep the DVDs (up to episode 21), but the truth is: It takes me 4 hours to read a page in original Japanese, and because it's all informal, I usually have to ask my son's godfather when I've reached the limit of my very, very small Japanese; I found the Kenshin easier (although he said it's much harder) because so much of the speech is more formal.

And, well, asking him isn't always easier, either. 'Cause, you know, there might be sarcasm somewhere, lurking. Or he might use the dreaded Socratic method. Pain all around.

I used to be that slow at reading manga in Japanese. It definitely takes a large time commitment to get faster.

Short, obnoxious girl? Right, as if they're not omnipresent. :)

I believe what I said was "little fountain?" because the characters made no sense in the context.

...

Clearly, I haven't been making your life miserable enough lately.

The problem, if it is one, is that capitalisation is one of the many features of the English language with which Japanese is so delightfully unfettered, rendering it such an easy language to learn. Whereas in English, if the person's name is Little Fountain, you have to remember to capitalise both words; in Japanese such things are simply left to the native speaker to infer from context.

Kodocha is brilliant, in a bizarre almost surreal way at times. I imagine it would be useful to keep around, if only to see exactly how DUMB a character can be, and still be completely adorable.

Okay, Sana is indeed a short obnoxious girl. But she's so fun to watch.

I can understand just needing the English version though.

I realize that? My remark doesn't say anything about there being short, obnoxious girls in all of them. Just that there are a lot. :3 I'm sorry if I offended you, didn't mean to. (I'm an avid manga reader myself--not to imply that you are, too, er...)

I luuv Miaka! I have the whole collection of shows from Fishigi Yugi as well as the later selections- I think she's awesome hehe. I found her friend Yui a little obnoxious tho.

From: [identity profile] moontear.livejournal.com
Yui was... "hard to get along with at times," I should say. I mean, WTF, Yui -- W.T.F. How can you do that to your best friend?! I mean, Miaka's like... a really kind, loving person, if not somewhat dense. Really. WHY WOULD SHE BACKSTAB YOU AND MAKE YOU TURN INTO THE MISERABLE PERSON YOU DID?

At least Yui (somewhat) redeems herself?

I really wanted Miaka to be with Hotohori, even though I knew it wouldn't happen. 8D (Except for that one kiss). Hotohoooriiii.

I know! and it turned out she wasn't even raped either! but you're right she did redeem herself at the end.

I thought I was the only one who wanted her to get with Hotohori a little bit! lol
the saddest part in the whole series was when he died :( i cried. (i'm a wimp lol)

Me, I'm a Tasuki fan. Of all the Seishi, he was the one I loved the most. But I have an intense weakness for grouchy loud-mouthed male characters.

Hotohori, Nuriko, and Tasuki were indeed my favorites. :0 Argh, I hated it in one of the OAVs where he was going to rape her, though (even if it turned out to not be his fault). I was like, TASUKIII. NO.

I remember reading a note Watase had written at the back of one of her manga (I forget which). She said she'd gone to a convention, and everyone was like, "Tamahome x Tasuki!" and she was like, "Yeah!" And then she said that inside she was really going, "Tamahome x Nakago!" and didn't want to say it for fear of the response she'd get.

XD Man, she loves Nakago.

You know who creeped me out? Especially with his laugh. Tomo! @__@;; And why did all the Seiyru boys get to be so pretty, yet, like, half of the opposing team there was either creepy/hideous. (I was in love with Suboshi, though, for a bit. :D;; THE TRAGIC TWIN. I wanted him and Yui to get together, ahahaha, talk about a toxic relationship).

OMG. Sorry about the FY ramble. XD

I have actually never seen the OAVs for exactly this reason. I refuse to let my enjoyment of Tasuki be tainted by the events of the OAVs. ;)

On the other hand, I loooOOoooved the little omake where both teams go up to the onsen and have to dress up as women. Especially the bit in the back of the bus where Tamahome and Miaka just sit there staring into each others' eyes, saying each others' names. Hilarity.

I've been itchin' to watch Escaflowne again. I originally watched it back in the days when there were no DVDs, and hence, no DVD extras. They apparently have some extras that were shown in Japan, but obviously not included on the VHS tapes.. Maaya Sakamoto and Tomokazu Seki came out to Anime Expo back in '05, at the panels for both of them they were asked about Cafe Escaflowne and both were embarrassed about it and so now I'm DYING to see what that is, neither the questions nor the answers were terribly revealing if you hadn't already seen whatever it was they were talking about.

At the time when I was first getting into anime (I'm not as much anymore, I tend to stick with manga), I was too young to really be able to do anything about it. And my mom didn't allow me a lot of computer time. So, -- I'd heard about Escaflowne, and I read all the summaries for the episodes, and then my friend had the movie when THAT came out, so I watched it, but...

Recently I started watching the episodes, or trying to when I can. :0 It's good, despite the old nature of the design.

I was rewatching Gundam Wing recently, too, haha.

The movie is *terrible*. I love the original series but could barely watch the movie. I find this to be the case with a lot of series where there was a movie made about it later. Utena also, although I'll grant you the series itself became almost unwatchable towards the end there too, so the movie could not help but be completely weird when built on the back of so much weirdness to start with. In the case where the movie or OAVs were first and the series came second, it's not so bad. For all that I prefer the Vampire Princess Miyu series to the OAVs, they at least weren't so weird as to be unwatchable.

I just don't watch all that much anime anymore. I'll get started on the manga, and then see what the anime has to offer, which usually starts before the manga is even FINISHED, and it just... it's not the saaaame. D: (Like the classic book vs. movie).

Sometimes instead of the short obnoxious girl, they have the short nearly autistic girl (Oh Chobits, you wound me), or a short sugary sweet girl you could probably stab and she'd still love you.
